WD My Passport Ultra USB-C External Drive – Tested & Reviewed

Seems like you can never have enough disk space, but cloud storage is so darn slow. Enter external hard drives. An old tech that’s still darn useful. Like the capacious Western Digital My Passport Ultra in 2TB and 4TB and featuring USB-C connectivity.

Tech expert Dave Taylor of got his hands on a 2TB My Passport Ultra USB-C (in blue!) and ran it through some tests and benchmarks to see just how fast it was. You can see the results in this review; it’s a pretty solid addition to your computing lineup, whether you’re Mac, PC or Linux.

Check it on Amazon:

  • How do you format it? I want to buy a WD my passport Ultra USB C 4Tb for my MacBook Pro. However, I also own a windows and I want to be able to work with the same Hard Drive in both laptops. Would this Hard Drive work to do that? And how do I format it to do so?

  • Hi, have you tested it inside a usb port type c GEN 2? (SS10?)

  • The ultra model is because it’s USB-C ? If I use it with a USB 3 port , then the wd passport will be as fast as the ultra model ? There a 30$ diff between the wd passport vs the wd passport ultra from amazon.ca

  • What is the difference between My Passport and My Passport Ultra (2019 models)?

  • That "read" test was not a read test at all, it was a copy test. The difference is, with a copy test the throughput is relying on the read speed of the source drive AND the write speed of the destination drive. A true realworld read test would be something like verifying a backup file or running a checksum validation (i.e. simply READing from an existing file already on the drive).

  • I dont much care for your channel but in contrast with what's out there you should be well over 700k subs, if I'm honest

  • Just grabbed the 4tb version for use with my ipad, was curious if during the drive spinning up and winding down if it made what to me seems like an odd sound like a scraping noise?
Just not sure if its the aluminum case and small size amplifying what is a normal noise I've just never noticed before.
